Writing a comparison and contrast essay – Topics and examples

Writing a comparison and contrast essay, sometimes called a comparison essay, is an assignment given to many college students. A comparison/contrast essay requires the writer to compare and contrast the ways in which two notions or things are similar or different. Comparison essay topics can range very broadly. It is important in the opening of the essay and in the essay conclusion (examples below) to maintain a proper structure.

How to write a comparison and contrast essay

  1. Begin your comparison and contrast essay with a sentence that is interesting or even startling to the reader. The point is to get them to read the rest of the essay and nothing is more boring than a comparison/contrast essay that opens with a whimper instead of a bang. If you have a startling fact or statistic, you can open with this. Alternatively, you can pose a question to the reader, the rest of which your essay seeks to resolve or answer. A comparison and contrast essay example would be: Did you know that the Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and The Odyssey by Homer share an arguably similar story structure?

  2. After your opening sentence, the rest of paragraph two will state either that the things or ideas are different, similar, or share some important similarities and differences.

  3. The next 3-5 paragraphs will comprise the body of your comparison essay. Here you will need to state how the topics or subjects are similar or different. Be sure to include concrete examples and include any relevant facts or data you may have encountered in your reading or research.

  4. Learning how to write a comparison essay conclusion is the hardest part of writing a comparison essay. Your conclusion should quickly and efficiently summarize your key points. Be sure to end with either a prediction for the future regarding your topic or a zippy statement to the effect of “We will just have to wait and see how this complicated and evolving issue plays out in the next several years.” That is a pretty good comparison essay conclusion example.

Tips and comparison essay examples

  • Don’t pick any comparison essay topics that are not easily comparable. If you have a choice in selecting your comparison essay topic, choose one that you feel strongly about as it will be easier for you to draft your essay if you are interested in the subject. However, be careful not to let any personal feelings creep to sharply into your essay. While it is generally okay to state your opinion in the comparison essay conclusion, do not go on about it or make any real moral or ethical judgments unless asked to do so.

  • After you have completed writing a comparison/contrast essay, you should go back and re-read it in its entirety. Make sure that your logic is sound and that all of your arguments make sense and are easy to follow. If you find sections of your paper that are not clear, take this opportunity to fix the problem. Nothing is more frustrating to a reader or professor than an essay that simply doesn’t really make much sense.

  • Don’t underestimate the power of brainstorming. A good place to start after you read a long list of comparison and contrast essay tips like this is to simply sit down and brainstorm on your essay topic for awhile. Make a list that outlines everything you have learned in your research about each subject and note how they are similar and how they are different. Do they share some basic, fundamental attributes, or are they very dissimilar? You will be surprised how much easier your task will be and how much better you will feel once you have started the job.
