Writing a great argumentative essay on nearly all argumentative essay topics

Learning how to write a great argumentative essay is not very difficult once you learn how to write one. The term argumentative essay, argument essay, and persuasive essay are used interchangeably and this can sometimes be confusing so it is important to keep in mind that they are synonymous. An argumentative essay or argument essay tries to convince the reader that your idea, notion, or course of action on a given subject, is the correct, proper, or valid one. In contrast to various other types of essays such as cause and effect essays, argumentative essay writing focuses upon arguing for or against only one position or side of an issue or debate.

How to write a great argumentative essay

  1. Establish and clearly lay out your position for the reader in a topic sentence in the first paragraph. This statement should not be a fact but an opinion or position that you are either in favor of or critiquing. Though you are putting forward an opinion, it should be done with authority and not written in the first person. However, ideas for argument essay topics are limited only by your imagination.

  2. In the same beginning paragraph, your next three or four sentences will essentially be your argumentative essay outline. They should be your strongest, most supportable reasons that you have to justify your specific position on the given topic.

  3. The next three paragraphs will comprise the body of your argumentative essay. In each paragraph, you will list one of your primary reasons and give the corresponding supporting facts, information, studies, and statistics that bolster your side of the argument. Be certain that you do not over-generalize or make wide-reaching assumptions of logic. Your position must be clearly laid out for your reader or you will lose them entirely. Even if you make several good points when writing an argumentative essay, the reader will never get to them if he stops reading because he cannot follow the logic of the argument.

  4. In writing a conclusion to an argument essay you will need to restate your original position in the opening sentence of the final paragraph. Spend a few minutes considering what language to choose here as it is your final chance to win over the reader or get him to understand or ally with your point of view.

Tips for writing a great argumentative essay on nearly all argument essay topics

  • Ideas for argumentative essay topics are really only limited by your imagination or the assignment you are given. However, if you are given a choice in selecting your argumentative essay topic, be certain that you can support it with several valid arguments. A good argumentative essay topic is the key to a successful argument essay.

  • Make sure that your transitions from one point to the next are relatively clear or you may confuse the reader.

  • Be sure that you provide specific and concrete facts or support for every reason that you offer to support your argument.

  • Read your essay and be certain that you can clearly and readily identify the introduction, body, and conclusion. If you cannot easily follow the structure of your argumentative essay, the reader cannot either.

  • Never introduce new information about your essay topic in the last part of your work. The closing of your argumentative essay should refocus your strongest points.
