Admissions essay writing for colleges can be a difficult and time-consuming task. Although well-meaning family and friends will tell you not to worry about the it and that you will get into college or graduate school, we realize how truly stressful this time can be. Indeed, it is not often that one is asked to sum up their entire academic and social value or merit in a page or two. Many schools request and even require essays to be no more than 500 words. There are more than 500 words on the page you are reading! So how do you accomplish great college admissions essay writing within a very limited amount of words and within a strict essay format? Rest assured, with time and a little effort, it can be done.

Firstly, it is important to take note of the specific essay requirements of the college or university to which you are applying. In fact, one of the most common reasons that student essays end up in the “dump” pile is that they exceed the word limit given by the essay instructions. There are truly some great college application essays that never get read by a majority of the admissions staff because the first reviewer has red-flagged the essay as being inappropriate or in violation of the essay requirements. While an essay submission of 550 words will likely not disqualify a student for admission to a university that requested 500 words, a submission of 650 words may bar their admission. This is because the school reviewers will be reading hundreds of admissions essays, and they will almost always toss essays that are well in excess of the requested maximum word length. While the application itself m ay be great, the college figures that if the student did not read and follow the basic essay requirements then they are not really a worthy candidate for admission. So, it really cannot be stressed enough – do not exceed the recommended word length by more than 50 words in any case, and generally try to stay within the actual guidelines.

Secondly, make absolutely certain that you read and re-read the admissions essay question. The second biggest reason for rejection aside from not following the word limit is simply not answering the question presented adequately or directly. Many schools request similar essays, but be sure that each application that you put in the mail specifically answers the question presented. While many students often try to save on time and effort by writing generic admission essays that satisfy the essay requirements of multiple schools, this is a road paved with rejection and unexpected heartache. The colleges and universities to which you are applying have been in this game far longer than you and they have become quite adept at weeding out students who draft a document specifically for their institution and those that are applying as an afterthought with a recycled essay. So please, for your sake, be sure to check that the work you have produced answers all facets of the question.

Finally, try to make your essay stand out from the crowd by being school-specific. This is a really great admissions essay writing tip that is not utilized often enough. Basically, take the extra few minutes to make each essay clearly distinctive to the school to which you are applying. For example, if you are applying to Cornell University with the intention of getting into their veterinary medicine program – mention this fact. Take a sentence to state why the school’s excellent reputation and proven record have led to it being a top choice of yours. There is another tip right there – you can write in each letter that the school is a “top-choice” school for you, which is quite different from saying it is “the” top choice school for you. At the very least, by incorporating the name of the school and your reasons for wanting to attend a specific program, you will differentiate yourself from about half the students who are applying to the school with a generic admissions application letter.
